Thread Veins

Thread Veins And Other Vascular Marks

(Telangiectasia, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as Spider Veins)

Thread veinsThread veins are commonly found on the legs, and on the face around the cheeks and nasal area as we age. These are more often permanently dilated blood capillaries than broken capillaries. Thread veins have very thin walls which constantly dilate and constrict. As we age, blood vessels lose their elasticity and can become permanently dilated leading to thread veins, spider veins and blood spots. Normally, the tiny veins in the skin are invisible, however thread veins are formed where the vessels have expanded and show through the skin. We can remove unsightly thread veins using ACP treatment or laser and IPL red vein treatment for facial vascular lesions or sclerotherapy for leg veins. Thread veins and other vascular blemishes are more common with increasing age, becoming are more obvious after mid-life, when the skin becomes thinner and loses some of its collagen and elasticity allowing delicate blood vessels to become more easily damaged. However, many people from school children to the elderly have vascular blemishes of some kind, and there are many factors involved in their development including ageing, sun bathing, pregnancy, smoking, energetic sports, obesity, harsh weathers and hormones. The tendency to develop them tends to run in families, commonly appearing in pregnancy and later from pushing during normal childbirth.

Thread veins and vascular marks do not signify any underlying medical problem, and are nothing to be concerned about, although many women and men do find them unsightly. They are basically letting us all know that are skin has seen better days. Thread veins are sometimes incorrectly called spider veins. There are important differences between thread veins and spider veins.

Spider Veins (Spider Naevus)

spider veinsAlthough thread veins and spider veins are interrelated, they are actually different from each other. A spider vein is a central dilated blood vessel which has smaller capillaries (thread veins) extending from it, like as the name spider vein suggests, the legs of a spider. Spider veins can be on their own or clumped in groups on the cheeks, legs and other areas. Again, spider veins can appear with age and are of no medical concern and are just as easily treated as thread veins and blood spots (Campbell de Morgan spots) using our advanced cosmetic procedures at the Evolutions Clinic in Winchester.
